Who do I phone to book an appointment?

To book an appointment for either a driver’s or learner’s licence, you will need to visit the licence office of your choice. Below is a list of all the centres with their physical addresses. Please note that you CANNOT make an appointment telephonically.

What is the license codes for learner’s and driver’s licenses and the age requirements?

  • Code 1
    • Motorcycle Code A1, less than 125cc, minimum age 16 years;
    • Motorcycle Code A, bigger than 125cc, minimum age 17 years.
  • Code 2 (B and EB)
    • This is for a light motor vehicle, where the minimum age to apply is 17 years for a learner’s license and 18 years for a driver’s license.
  • Code 3 (C, C1, EC1 and EC)
    • Minimum age is 18 years.

What you need to apply for learner’s license appointments?

  • Appointment date;
  • Either a SA ID, valid SA passport or a temporary ID;
  • Eye test to be done;
  • R66-00 for application;
  • and 1 ID photo.

What do you need on the day of the learner's license test?

  • Either a SA ID, valid SA passport or a temporary ID;
  • The receipt for your appointment;
  • 1 ID photo for the learner’s license;
  • and R36-00 for issuing of a learner’s license.

What you will need to apply for driver’s licenses?

  • Appointment date;
  • Either a SA ID/valid SA passport or a temporary ID;
  • R170-00 for a light motor vehicle license;
  • R175-00 for a heavy motor vehicle license;
  • R136-00 for a motorcycle license;
  • 1 ID photo.

What do you need on the day of the test for your driver’s license?

  • Either a SA ID/valid SA passport or a temporary ID;
  • Learner’s license;
  • R150-00 for the issuing of your driver’s license;
  • and 3 Photos.

How long is a card type driver’s licenses valid for?

A driver’s license card is only valid for five (5) years. If you apply on or before the expiry date, the license shall stay valid for three (3) months after the expiry date. Conditions apply*

What do need to renew your card type license?

  • Either a SA ID/valid SA passport or a temporary ID;
  • 4 Photos; and
  • R150-00.

How do you apply for conversion of a foreign driver’s license to a South African card type driver’s license?

This applies to the conversion of the old license in the book of life to the new credit card driving license format due to a number of reasons, i.e. detained, medical, and studying or on contract of employment outside the borders of the republic. This is in accordance to section18 (6) of NRTA 93 of 1996.

The applicant must

  • apply at a registered driving license testing centre,
  • in writing,
  • to the MEC for transport stating the reasons why the old license in the ID was not converted from 1 March 1998 to 30 April 2003 - period of conversion as announced by the minister on the sixth amendment, dated 7 October 2003. The driver’s license testing centre must cover-up with UMR;
  • Attach a copy of your ID and driver’s license;
  • Attach a copy of your passport with all the exit and entry stamps into South Africa;
  • Attach a letter from your employer, school, correctional service (if detained), or medical institution (if sick);
  • and Application must be made within six (6) months from the date of return or release.

What do you need to apply for conversion of a foreign driver’s license to a South African driver’s license?

  • South African ID;
  • Original driver’s license;
  • Letter from the relevant embassy;
  • Proof of address i.e. water and lights, cell phone or credit card account;
  • If a SA citizen and worked or studied outside of SA borders and obtained a driver’s license during that time, provide written proof to that effect.
  • Proof of the date of entry and exit at the border also needed;
  • and Conversion can only be done within one year after permanent residence has been obtained.

How do you apply for a professional driving permit (PRDP)?

Professional driving permit shall stay valid for four (4) months after reply. Renewal card type is only valid for two (2) years.

  • A SA ID/valid SA passport or a temporary ID;
  • 4 Photos;
  • A doctor’s application form that must be completed by both you and the doctor and returned to the driver’s license testing centre;
  • R66-00 for the application;
  • South African police clearance and fingerprints, which must be done at South African Police Services.
    Results take approximately six weeks. Once results are back at the testing centre, the applicant can finalise the application; PRDP is valid for four (4) months until the South African Police Service results are received by the testing centre;
  • R150-00 to be paid for issuing of PRDP.

If it has expired on the date of application, procedures are the same as for a new application.

What are the photo requirements for a driver's license?

  • The must all be the same;
  • Background clear cut and without shadows;
  • 40mm in height by 30mm in width;
  • Depict only the head and shoulders of the applicant;
    • and Show the applicant’s full face,
    • without headgear (except with official approval);
  • Not damaged.

Photos not complying can be rejected by Prodiba, which can result in the inconvenience of having to repeat the process of submitting another set of photos.

What are the eye test criteria used?

Defective vision disqualifying person from obtaining or holding license.

A person will be disqualified from obtaining or holding a learner’s or driver’s license unless:

  • In the case of an application for a learner’s or diver’s license relating to the code A1, A, B or EB, such person has:
    • according to the Snellen rating a minimum visual acuity, with or without refractive correction, of 6/12 (20/40) for each eye, or where one eye of the acuity of one eye is less than 6/12 (20/40) or where one eye of the person concerned is blind, a minimum visual acuity for the other eye of 6/9 (20/30);
    • and a minimum visual field of 70 degrees temporal, with or without refractive correction, in respect of each eye is less than 70 degrees temporal, where one eye is blind, a minimum total horizontal visual field of at least 115 degrees with or without refractive correction; or
  • In the case of an application for a learner’s or driver’s license relating to the code C1, C, EC1 or EC, such person has:
    • according to the Snellen rating a minimum visual acuity, with or without refractive correction, of 6/9 (20/30) for each eye; and
    • a minimum visual field of 70 degrees temporal in respect of each eye, with or without refractive correction.

A person who is disqualified in terms of sub regulation (1) may,

  • at such person’s expense, approach a registered optometrist or ophthalmologist to examine their eyes in terms of the standards referred to in sub regulation (1). The result of such test shall, if it duly reflects the visual acuity of such person according to the Snellen rating, and his or her field of vision expressed in degrees, as contemplated in sub regulation (1), be accepted by the driving license testing centre.
  • If the result contemplated in paragraph (a) indicates that the person concerned is disqualified as contemplated in sub regulation (1), the testing centre shall not issue such person with a learner’s or driver’s license with a code to which the application of that person relates.

What do you need to know about fingerprints?

Good quality fingerprints are a must. A good quality fingerprints is a vital link in making the National Driving license Project a success.

Common fingerprint error:

  • Touching the frame;
  • Spotty inking;
  • Rolled fingerprints;
  • Partial fingerprints;
  • Rotated fingerprints;
  • Too little ink;
  • Smudged fingerprints.

Fingerprints can be rejected by Prodiba resulting in the inconvenience of repeating the process.
