EKURHULENI GIVES LEGENDARY JAZZ SINGER MAMA THANDI KLASSEN A HERO'S FAREWELL
A Special Council Meeting was convened on the 20th January 2017, at the Germiston Chambers to put an urgent motion to Council. In an address put forward by the Mayor of Ekurhuleni, Cllr Mzwandile Masina a resolution according to the protocol policy was adopted by Council to grant a Civic funeral as well as Posthumous Freedom of the City to Thandi Klassen.
This is the highest honour conferred to an individual by the City. Previous recipients include the late ANC stalwart O.R Tambo and Mrs Adelaide Tambo.
Motivating the motion, the City's Mayor stated the pivotal role played by the late Mama Thandi Klassen, not only as a world renowned musician but also in advancing the freedom of this country during the apartheid era.
Fiercely active in her Eden Park community, she engaged the youth and assisted them to develop their talent in music, leaving a remarkable legacy for aspiring Jazz artists in Ekurhuleni.
A unanimous decision was taken by Council to accord Mama Thandi Klassen the befitting funeral she deserved.
The Klassen family joined the Ekurhuleni Special Council meeting as guests in order to formally pass ceremonial condolences which was beautifully executed with the EMPD Choir adding robust melody to a sombre occasion.
Well known for being vocal and expressive, Ma Thandi (as she is affectionately known) will be remembered for her daring fashion sense, her sparkling personality, her irrefutable love of people and her passion for jazz.
The funeral date is set for the 27th January 2017 and will be held at Heroes Acres, further details will be communicated in due course through The Office of the Speaker.
