Clr Robert Mashego started his activism as a student in the early 70s and later on when he joined Transnet he then joined the trade union SA Transport and Allied Workers' Union (Satawu) in the 80s till to date. He has been vocal especially about workers rights. Today he is a full time Satawu representatives having gone up the union’s ranks as a Deputy President of the organization and its chief negotiator on labour issues. He joined the UDF in 1986 and four years late became a member of the ANC in 1990 and has been a councillor since 1995. During which period he served on the HR, Legal and Co-operative, Housing and LLF committees. Following the local government elections of May 2011 Clr Mashego was appointed as the Chief Whip of Council.
