“When I first came to the then Transvaal to look for work, I was harassed by the police for being in a place without a valid permit. I then said that I was going to fight these injustices,” explains Clr Maseko as to how and why she became involved in politics, in the early 70s. A council in local government since 1995, she has served on the health, water and energy and grants in aid committees. She hopes to, in her new term of office, that every citizen should be educated and know hoe local government works and what the role of a councillor is – to deliver on promises and increase the number of attendees to any ward public meeting. “For us to achieve our mandate,” says Clr Maseko, “we should strive for unity. Corruption should be dealt with decisively.” In addition the councillor feels strongly that allocated budget should be used in each financial year.
