Dis-Chem ride for sight race lives up to expectations
Arran Brown, winner of the 24th The Dis-Chem Ride for Sight (DRFS) has commended the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality
for its excellence in traffic management during the weekend’s coveted cycling competition held in Boksburg.
Brown who has been cycling for over ten years has participated in the Dis-Chem Ride for Sight competition about six times before but this is the first time he made it to the top spot.
He won both the Elite and Under 23, 116km main event in a scintillating time of 2:34:30. He out-sprinted second placed Nolan Hoffmann of Tasol Solar GT for a nail biting finish.
“I am happy I made it on the number one spot this time. It’s an incredible experience and I would particularly like to thank Ekurhuleni for a splendid job in the traffic management. It was well organised and it felt like it was held in an European country. The rolling road closure, with superb bike marshalling, was as good as you get anywhere in the world. This allowed us the freedom to compete at a very high level”,” an ecstatic Brown of MTN Qhubeka said.
Last year the race became an official Ekurhuleni event as the City of Ekurhuleni became a hosting partner to ensure the event continues to live up to its billing as one of the premier cycling events on the Gauteng calendar.
The 1st prize for the top man and lady in the DRFS has been increased to R12 000 each. In addition, cash prizes in these two categories were awarded to the first 12 cyclists.
The winner on the female category is Cherise Taylor who, with wins in 2008, 2009 and 2011 further proved her dominance in the competition.
“The 5700 cyclists that took to the roads of Boksburg participated fully aware that only two people in the men and women race will emerge on the top spot but the zeal of these men and women was motivated by the cause to raise money in the fight against retinal blindness,” says metro’s spokesperson Justice Mohale.
Director for Science of Retina South Africa and Vice President of Retina international, Claudette Medefindt said all proceeds will go to the Retina South Africa to bring treatments and cures for retinal blinding conditions to South Africa.
“The progress being made internationally is encouraging. For the first time a cure is truly in sight,” she said.
