The pre-school years are the most important in the development of a child, so why then do we leave the introduction of sport until primary school?

Well, pre-school children in Ekurhuleni need not wait for “big school” to get a taste of formal sport as the City of Ekurhuleni presents this year’s sporting area games. Principals and teachers at nursery schools are urged to enlist their five and six year-olds in this competition made up of ball throwing, hopping, dribbling and kicking, relay running and ring throwing.

The tournament is set to begin at a customer care area stage on Thursday, March 1,and will culminate in the metro-wide Kiddies Olympics finals in May.

“Ball throwing, dribbling, hopping and the other activities which form part of these games form the base of any sporting code, but more importantly, they develop a child’s gross motor skills which are essential to their development,” says the Metro’s spokesperson Justice Mohale.

“It is therefore crucial that we get our children involved in physical activity at this vital stage of their lives, and therefore the City of Ekurhuleni has developed this programme.”

Those interested may contact the following people to find out where they can register and when the games are to take place in their area:
