Communities in the Ekurhuleni area are encouraged to access the free health screening services that are being offered by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality’s Health Department as part of the reproductive health awareness days.

February is Reproductive Health Month according the South African Health calendar and in observing this, the municipality will be holding interactive sessions at three areas focusing on male circumcision, prostate cancer, breastfeeding, family planning, termination of pregnancy, antenatal care and teenage pregnancy.

On February 23 the talks will be held at the D. H. Williams Hall in Katlehong. On February 24 the awareness campaign will move to Rabasotho Hall in Tembisa and end on February 29 in Daveyton at the Victor Ndlazilwana community hall. The activities will commence at 09:00 until 15:00 at each of the venues.

Since the focus is sexual health, matters relating to HIV and AIDS as well as other sexually transmitted illnesses will also be discussed. HIV Counseling and Testing will be available.

Furthermore, breast and cervical cancer, blood pressure and blood sugar, body mass index (BMI), eye and oral hygiene screening will be conducted at no cost.

“It is important for communities to take advantage of the free services that government is bringing to their door steps. Often people are reluctant to come forth to establish what their health status but research shows that people that know where they stand health wise are able to take better care of themselves or receive help early where it is necessary,” explains municipal spokesperson Justice Mohale.
