A special operation between 4am and 10am on 12 September by the City, together with the SAPS, netted 61 arrests for illegal power connections, public violence and malicious damage to infrastructure. The arrested suspects, save one, were denied bail on Friday, 14 September at the Tembisa Magistrate's Court.
The operation was prompted by fights between residents from the Madelukufa informal settlement and Tembisa, which were triggered by the theft of electricity by some Madelukufa residents. This led to overloading and tripping of power causing frustration by those households who pay for the power.
Fifty-three suspects were charged with public violence and malicious damage to property and will appear in court next week, and seven suspected kingpins of illegal connections were refused bail and will appear in court in October.
The City is identifying all areas where such illegal activity is taking place which costs the City millions of rands annually. Similar operations will be carried out to rid the City of illegal power connections.
