Council declares civic funeral for Katlehong ward councillor

On Thursday, 10th August 2017, council regrettably learnt of the passing of ward councillor, (Cllr) Johannes Tebogo Maama (J.T) who served in ward 59, Katlehong.

Born in Tsakane in 1973, Cllr Maama was recruited into politics when he joined the Congress of South African Students (COSAS) in 1984 at the tender age of 11, the youngest primary school pupil to be allowed to join the student movement at that time. He later moved to Katlehong where he earned the nickname "Mokaba" due to his political aptitude.

Best described as inquisitive and conscious, as a leader he exemplified the principles of ubuntu. Cllr Maama lived his life devoted to the liberation movement and his track record as an activist shows his commitment to fighting for freedom. He was a critical member in the structures that fought the system of apartheid in Ekurhuleni. His passing has dealt a blow to the community as he was a valued member who served in the institution as a deployed councillor of the African National Congress (ANC).

In her opening address during today's extra ordinary sitting, Cllr Patricia Kumalo shared a message of honour, "We are gathered here today to pay tribute to one of our own.

We are saddened by his passing but we know he lived a life committed to fighting for freedom". Cllr Jongizizwe Dlabathi, Chief Whip of Council delivered a motion according to standing rule 85 of 3, where council resolved that the late Cllr J.T Maama would receive a civic funeral and that he will be laid to rest at Heroes Acres.

During the sitting, political parties shared messages of condolence and support to the family of the late ward councillor. On his passing he was serving as the Whip in the Community Safety Oversight Committee and as a member of the Public Participation Committee. He is lovingly remembered as a caring father, revered community leader and an active councillor who served his community diligently.
