After three weeks since the transformer at Thokoza substation burnt and left all customers connected to it without electricity, the City was ready to start switching customers gradually back on.
On Tuesday, 28 July, the transformer was taking load to limited customers. It was indicated to customers that the 20 MVA transformer would not cover the whole of Thokoza because of bypassed meters and illegal connections.
The following day, Wednesday, 29 July, the community stormed the substation and violently demanded that the City switch off everyone until the second transformer is repaired and all customers are connected. This was done in a violent manner with the community protesting and burning tyres.
At the moment all customers are off and the transformer is idling.
