Electricity Theft Cost the City Millions

The City is owed more than R8 million in unpaid electricity bills by businesses and some residents of Ekurhuleni.

In a bid to recover the money, the City disconnected power from businesses and residents between 21 and 24 June. Those affected are from Edenvale, Germiston, Bedfordview, Boksburg, Lillianton, Beyerspark and Dawn Park.

During the operation to disconnect those in the bad books, fines to the value of R1.8 million were issued to those who were found to have fiddled with their meter boxes.

Residents and businesses are urged to make arrangements with the City’s finance department if they have challenges in paying for their services.
