Biography

Cllr. John Senona serves as Speaker of Council in the City of Ekurhuleni. He is the political head of the legislative arm of Council responsible for overseeing Council processes and ensuring that proceedings are conducted fairly and in line with the rules.

He matriculated in 2008 and pursued a Diploma in Business Administration. He later obtained a qualification in Forensic Investigation from the University of Johannesburg. Before entering public office, he worked in the healthcare sector with institutions such as Ampath Laboratory, Lancet Laboratory, and the University of Johannesburg.

His leadership was shaped during the Fees Must Fall movement, where he was involved in student activism focused on access to education. That period played a role in shaping his outlook on public service. He later joined the African Transformation Movement (ATM) and was elected as a proportional representative councillor in 2021.

Prior to becoming Speaker, he served as Chairperson of the Section 79 Ethics and Integrity Committee, where he worked on strengthening governance processes, including the introduction of electronic declaration systems.

As Speaker of Council, Cllr. Senona presides over Council sittings, ensures compliance with legislative frameworks, and maintains order and fairness in Council proceedings.
