Access to Adequate Housing for All

Section 26(1) of the Constitution provides that everyone shall have the right of access to adequate housing. Accessibility means that government must create conducive conditions for all its citizens, irrespective of their economic status, to access affordable housing. The right to adequate housing ensures that people enjoy physical and mental health and live in a safe place in peace and dignity.

As part of this mandate government should offer housing opportunities through the provision of affordable rental housing to low in come market through the Social Housing and Institutional Subsidy programmes.

Promoting an Integrated Society and a Liveable Human Settlements

More destitute people are set to have their lives dignified as various mega developments take shape across the City of Ekurhuleni.  A staggering R87 million has been allocated to land acquisition that will see an accelerated planning and approval for construction of integrated housing developments. All the land identified is strategically located closer to areas of opportunity.

Integrated housing units will go along towards addressing the City’s housing problem due to dwindling land over population.

The City of Ekurhuleni housing plan will deliver a whole range of facilities and amenities necessary for the creation of safe, secure and sustainable human settlement closer to economic opportunities with elements of decent living standards.

Some of these integrated mega housing projects have been rolled out in Van Dyk (3 350 mixed housing units), John Dube (12 295 mixed housing units), Clayville (16 276 mixed housing unit), Leeuwpoort (22 000 mixed housing units) and Esselen Park Mega Project (7 200 mixed housing unit).

Within the settlement, provision has also been made for public open spaces, community facilities which include schools, library and transportation networks. The City recognises the importance of connecting people to their places of work and to industry, therefore reliable transport network system is of utmost important in this project.
