Increasing Police Visibility through Building Precincts Over Two Decades

In an effort to fight crime and strengthen law enforcement in the City 10 additional metro police precincts have been built over the past 20 years. This adds to the 12 already in existence before the City came into existence in 2000.

Executive Mayor Cllr Mzwandile Masina, during his 2020 State of the City Address stated: “This is material evidence of our commitment to combat crime in our City, for we recognise that safety and security are the most basic job of government.”

In 20 years, the City achieved to establish the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department headquarters closer to the OR Tambo International Airport, within the broader context of the City’s plans for the Aerotropolis.

According to EMPD Acting Spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng, the completion of a specialised services precinct in Boksburg was delayed due to COVID-19.

“This precinct will have specialised units such as the Dog Unit, Community Liaison, Public Order Policing, K-9, VIP and SWAT/Intervention,” says Mokheseng.

Services provided in the EMPD precincts include attending to complaints and accidents, opening cases and sending to relevant police station, escorts, bylaw duty and crime prevention operations.
