Ekurhuleni township business hubs helping boost local economy

The City continues to roll out a transformative programme to boost local economies by establishing township business hubs.

These hubs are designed to support small and informal businesses by offering access to trading spaces, incubation services, light manufacturing facilities, and business mentorship.

Township economies play a vital role in driving grassroots economic activity. According to Ald Nomadlozi Nkosi, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Development Planning and Real Estate, “Townships must become self-sufficient and vibrant economic centres. Supporting township enterprises is key to inclusive growth and building sustainable communities.”

The City’s strategy is built around six key pillars:

  1. Simplifying Regulations – Reducing red tape around permits and licensing to make it easier for township businesses to operate.
  2. Promoting Production – Encouraging manufacturing and clustering of enterprises to increase productivity and value-chain participation.
  3. Infrastructure Support -Developing industrial parks, business hubs, and retail spaces to provide a sturdy foundation for enterprise growth.
  4. Entrepreneurship Development – Identifying and nurturing local entrepreneurial talent through targeted support programmes.
  5. Access to Finance – Improving financial access to help businesses grow and become self-reliant.
  6. Market Access – Supporting township enterprises to tap into both local and broader markets, including through consumer cooperatives and supply chain linkages.

This initiative aims to turn townships into thriving economic zones, stimulate job creation, and strengthen Ekurhuleni’s broader economy by unlocking the full potential of local entrepreneurs.
