Ekurhuleni urges informal businesses to register for trading permits and licenses
The City is calling on all Ekurhuleni based businesses to obtain the necessary operating licences and trading permits in compliance with the Businesses Act No. 71 of 1991.
This requirement applies to an array of businesses, including restaurants, pubs, informal traders, and spaza shops.
The City has noted a sizeable number of businesses that operate illegally in Ekurhuleni much against municipal regulations. The City has a constitutional obligation to protect consumers from substandard goods and services that may compromise their health and safety.
“Running a business without a valid license or permit not only undermines the rule of law but also poses risks to consumers,” said MMC for Development Planning and Real Estate Ald Nomadlozi Nkosi.
“Illegal business operations can result in the sale of substandard products, affecting residents’ rights as consumers.”
Additionally, compliance with licensing laws provides businesses with access to government support and financial assistance.
“Government procurement systems are now interconnected. To provide services to the City, businesses must possess a valid tax clearance certificate and be registered on the Central Supplier Database (CSD),” Nkosi explained.
Application forms can be obtained at the nearest Customer Care Centre (CCC), or on the City’s website on www.ekurhuleni.gov.za.
