WARNING: TENDER SCAM ALERT IN EKURHULENI
Scammers Posing as Municipal Officials – Stay Alert!
The City of Ekurhuleni is calling on all residents, service providers, small businesses, and contractors to remain vigilant against individuals pretending to represent the municipality in matters related to tenders and procurement.
In recent months, fraudsters have been impersonating City officials, using fake names, cloned municipal letterheads, and false emails to trick local businesses. These scammers claim that you’ve been awarded a tender or are under consideration, but only if you pay a fee upfront.
How the Scam Works
Scammers typically:
- Claim to be from the City’s Supply Chain or Procurement departments.
- Send fake tender award letters that appear official.
- Use free or suspicious email addresses (e.g., Gmail or Yahoo).
- Ask for “processing fees,” delivery costs, or storage payments before any paperwork is issued.
- Push victims to act quickly to avoid verification.
Red Flags to Look Out For
Be cautious if:
- You’re told you’ve won a tender you never applied for.
- You’re asked to pay any money upfront.
- You’re contacted using private email accounts or personal cell numbers.
- The person refuses to meet at official municipal offices or avoids face-to-face meetings.
- Documents contain errors or appear altered.
Report Suspicious Activity
If you suspect any fraudulent tender activity or are unsure about a communication, do not pay or engage further. Instead, report it immediately:
- City Call Centre: 0860 543 000
- Anti-Corruption Hotline: 0800 102 201
