APPLICATION PROCEDURE FOR BURIAL IN THE CITY

Residents of the City have the right to bury their loved ones in local cemeteries. To do this, they must follow the application procedure. Applications must be made to the City on the prescribed form. This form is available at our cemetery office and must be submitted to the cemetery superintendent.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS:

The following documents must accompany the application:

Proof of payment of the prescribed fee.

  1. A burial order issued in terms of the Births and Deaths Registration Act, 1992 (Act no. 51 of 1992.
  2. Death certificate.
  3. Proof of address as follows:
    1. Municipal utility bill,
    2. Letter from the Customer Care Office,
    3. A letter from the ward councillor, or
    4. An affidavit signed by a commissioner of oaths.

NOTE:
The application for a burial must be made at the office where the intended burial will take place. Alternatively, it can be made at a cemetery office as indicated by a cemetery officer. It is important for an applicant to state whether the application is for a first, second, or third burial in a grave.

  • Community members must also note that the application for a burial must be submitted at least one working day (1) before the interment. If this is not done, the City may decline the application, except in exceptional circumstances.
  • In the case of Muslim and Jewish burials, where the body must be interred on the same day as the death of the deceased, the application for the interment must be submitted on the first working day after the interment.  
  • Notice of cancellation or postponement of a burial must be given at least four (4) working hours before the burial, failing which the applicant must pay an additional fee of 50% of the prescribed fee.
