The City Celebrates World Book Day
A virtual World Book Day was hosted on 23 April by the City’s Library and Information Services in partnership with Gauteng Province.
World Book Day was started by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on 23 April 1995 to celebrate books and authors, as well as encourage young people to read and write.
This annual event is meant to create awareness about the importance of reading. The virtual World Book Day this year was held under the theme ‘To Share a Story’, and it attracted a number of authors and ardent readers.
“It is extremely important for us as the City to cultivate a culture of reading to our young people,” said Karin Muller, Divisional Head for Library and Information Services.
Some of the resolution from the meeting include hosting of constant meetings where readers and writers can meet to share ideas. The meeting also decided on a campaign to teach primary school pupils to write a book.
