MMC Mmoko Calls for By-Law Compliance
“It is very important for residents to comply with the City’s by-laws if they want to erect a structure on their property.”
These are the words of Member of Mayoral Committee for Community Safety, Cllr Phaladi Mmoko, in response to a video that went viral on social media showing the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) removing a wall fence outside a property in Vosloorus.
“The by-law enforcement operation carried out in Vosloorus on Sunday was part of our daily operations as the EMPD to ensure compliance. This follows numerous complaints laid by the community regarding the establishment and engagement with the property owner,” said MMC Mmoko.
He explained that the community members drafted a petition that was presented to the Gauteng Provincial Legislature. Among the concerns noted in the petition were noise pollution, encroaching on municipal servitude and erecting a structure that obstructed pedestrian walking on the safe side of the road.
MMC Mmoko urged residents to refrain from building structures that are prohibited and infringe on municipal by-laws.
“We are happy that the community of Vosloorus took up the role of active citizenship by raising their concerns to the authorities,” he said.
Residents who wish to make structural changes to buildings must present building plans to the City Planning offices in the customer care centres for approval.
