Mayor Masina Announces Precautionary Measures for State of The City Address

Executive Mayor Cllr Mzwandile Masina today (15 March) announced precautionary measures for this year’s State of the City Address (SOCA) to protect the citizens of the Ekurhuleni due to the ongoing global situation regarding the coronavirus (COVID-19).

After careful consultation with community services officials regarding the health and safety of everyone set to attend the SOCA, the Office of the Executive has made the difficult decision to cancel all SOCA public viewing areas and restrict the attendance of guests at the event.

Following increased and overwhelming concerns about the COVID-19 virus pandemic, the Office of Executive Mayor felt this was the best way to proceed during such an unprecedented global situation.

The SOCA will be digitally live streamed on the City’s digital platforms –  Facebook and Twitter. Citizens are urged to use the City’s free wi-fi services to stream the speech on the various digital platforms. The SOCA will also be broadcast on the following media channels:

  • NewzRoom Afrika (Channel 405 on DSTV)
  • Power FM
  • Kaya FM
  • Lesedi FM
  • Kasie FM
  • Voice of Tembisa
  • All City of Ekurhuleni Customer Care Centre screens

“We are very disappointed that we are unable to host the public and invited guests for this year’s SOCA event. But we know it’s the right decision based on the information we have today. In my address I will be outlining the City’s state of preparedness to deal with the COVID-19 outbreak. This is not a signal for the public to panic, but the start of new habits we must adopt in order to protect our people,” said Mayor Masina.

Members of the media are still welcome to attend and cover the event. Hand sanitising stations will be available throughout the venue and social distancing measures will be applied to camera and seating arrangements.
