CITY CONTINUES WAR ON ILLEGAL ELECTRICITY CONNECTIONS
The city is on course to fight the prevalent scourge of illegal electricity connections and the vandalism of essential infrastructure. This was evident on Thursday, 25 July when the city conducted a joint operation between the Energy Department, EMPD, SAPS and Gauteng Traffic and Crime Prevention Units to remove 4500 illegal connections in Mayfield Ext 8 and 9, Benoni.
This successful collaborative effort aims to prevent electricity theft, ensure public safety and to protect essential infrastructure.
“Illegal connections do not only put the lives of innocent people at risk, but they also put pressure on the grid leading to unnecessary power outages due to the system overload,” explains metro spokesman Zweli Dlamini, appealing to communities to stop the practice.
The city will continue to conduct similar operations across the city.
