CITY SENDS CONDOLENCES TO WASTE TRUCK ACCIDENT VICTIM

The City of Ekurhuleni expresses it’s sympathy and heartfelt condolences to the family that lost a toddler in an accident involving waste truck yesterday in Villa Liza. The accident also left an adult with minor injuries.

During the unfortunate incident, a waste truck belonging to a service provider contracted to the city’s department of Waste Management Services was involved in an accident where two pedestrians were struck and one individual a two (2) year-old child tragically passed on at the scene, living the adult with minor injuries.

“We are extremely saddened by this incident and our heartfelt sympathy goes to the family of the little boy. We also wish the injured person a speedy recovery,” said city spokesman Zweli Dlamini.

Comprehensive waste collection services in the area are fully outsourced under the contracted service provider. As such, the service provider has promised to take full responsibility as required by the contract entered to with the city.

According to the contract entered into between the city and the service provider, the city is indemnified by clause 23; bullet 1 on page 23 of the bid document, which states that ‘the service provider shall at its own cost and expense take out insurance in respect of all risks for which it is prudent for the service provider to be insured against, including any liability it may have as a result of its activities under the Agreement for, liabilities that may arise due to, theft, destruction, death or injury to any person and damage to property’.

The matter is still under SAPS investigation.
