CRIME FORCES TEMPORAL CLOSURE OF WELTEVREDEN LANDFILL SITE

The City of Ekurhuleni wishes to notify patrons of the temporal closure of the Weltevreden landfill site near Brakpan. The facility has been shut down due to criminality that is linked to illegal mining.

Recently a shootout ensued amongst the illegal miners on one of the facility’s working phase forcing the EMPD to deploy officers to monitor the situation closely. No injuries have been detected and the EMPD remains on high alert.

Members of the public to avoid the area as the situation remains volatile. In the meantime, patrons are advised to use nearby landfill sites such as Rietfontein landfill site in KwaThema and the Rooikraal landfill site in Dawn Park, Boksburg.

The city apologises for the inconvenience this may cause, and undertakes to keep the public up to date with developments.
