Motorists Nabbed For Speeding and Drunken Driving In Benoni and Kempton Park
On 26 and 27 December the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Anti High Speed Unit and OR Tambo International Airport Precinct officers conducted crime prevention operations and 16 drivers, who decided to ignore the speed limit and some, driving while intoxicated, were arrested and booked.
Between 07h00 to 09h00 in Benoni on the corner of Kingsway and Main Reef roads, which is zoned 80km/h, the EMPD Anti High Speed Unit arrested two drivers for exceeding the regulated speed limit. At 07h59, a 28-year-old male driving the BMW sedan claiming that he was rushing to the shopping malls, was handcuffed for clocking 143km/h. A 45-year-old female in a Nissan SUV, citing that she was on her way home, was arrested for registering 124 instead of 80km/h on that stretch of road. Both lawbreakers facing charges of reckless and negligent driving, were escorted to Benoni police station.
Between 18h00 and 02h00 on Sunday, the EMPD OR Tambo International Airport precinct officers staged a roadblock at the corner of CR Swart and Old Pretoria roads where 14 intoxicated male motorists were apprehended. The offenders, aged between 27 and 50, caught driving sedans, LDVs, coupes and station wagons, failed the sobriety test conducted on site. The detained wrongdoers, facing charges of driving while under the influence of alcohol/intoxicated, were marched off to Kempton Park police station.
All 16 are expected to appear in court soon.
