Six Speedsters Nabbed
During a high visibility and anti-excessive speeding operation on 17 December, the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) night shift Speed Enforcement Unit handcuffed six drivers for disobeying the displayed regulatory signs.
From 18h30 to 20h00 on the R554 road between Afrikaner and R23, which is zoned 70km/h, three motorists were stopped and apprehended. At 19h44, a 37-year old male in a VW Polo hatchback was caught doing 126km/h, citing he was rushing to visit his admitted girlfriend in one of the Johannesburg public hospital. The other two lawbreakers (a male and female) aged 31 and 37, with excuses such as rushing home after both registering speeds of 110km/h, were also nabbed.
Meanwhile, between 21h00 and 23h00 on the R23 road from Newkleinfontein to Kaapmaiden, three drivers were cornered and arrested for disobeying the displayed 80km/h speed limit sign. At 22h45, a 48-year old female driving a Haval SUV, without any reason for exceeding the speed limit, was caught clocking 136km/h. The remaining two male speedsters were caught doing 122km/h and 130km/h, and alleged that they were rushing to close shops and pick up their children from day care.
The half dozen facing charges of reckless and negligent driving, detained at Brakpan police station, are expected to appear at the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court soon.
