CITY IS AUDITING WASTE SERVICE POINTS TO IMPROVE SERVICES
The City of Ekurhuleni is auditing waste collection points to assess the quality of service to customers and the impact of the exponential growth of the city to waste collection services.
The current phase of the audit started in October 2021 and will end in June 2022. The waste service point audit is targeting households, industries and community organizations among other institutions.
The key focus areas are the Northern and Eastern regions of the city since the Southern region was attended to in the first phase.
Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Environment Resources and Waste Management Services Alderman Andre Du Plessis says, “The City of Ekurhuleni presents many economic opportunities for people from all over the country, thereby increasing the need for human settlements, and once there is an increase in housing it means there will be an increase in waste management services. That is why it is important to conduct the survey to ascertain if we are still on track in providing services to all residents of the city.
The waste service point audit will help put our house in order. From the findings of the survey we will be able to allocate proper resources to depots. We will be able to eliminate service delivery disruptions, and determines the exact number of customers who receive waste management services and we will also be able categorize customer according the type of service they require and receive.”
The fieldworkers carrying out the survey are identifiable as follows: They carry name tags with their pictures and identity numbers; Their identity cards have contact details of their supervisor from the city’s department of waste management services and the surveyors use electronic gadgets such tablets and maps.
In addition, residents and business owners need to note that no money is needed from the customers to conduct the audit at a visited property.
The project has created temporary employment for over 200 community members from the wards where the audit will be carried out.
