Ekurhuleni Continues to Raise the Healthcare Services Benchmark

Ekurhuleni mobile clinics, staffed with healthcare workers, have travelled the length and breadth of the region providing much-needed care to residents of informal settlements for over 20 years, and continue to do so.

Mkhulu Fredrick Williams (63), who has been living in Ekurhuleni for 24 years, has praises for the City’s health practitioners for raising the healthcare services benchmark.

“I have always seen these mobile clinics and underestimated their services. However, as my legs became too weak to carry me in the past four years, I have been more than happy to visit the mobile clinic because I trusted that I would receive the same satisfactory service as I would at a clinic,” said Williams.

Mkhulu Williams jokingly added that one could even say the service from the mobile clinic at Windmill Park, where he visited, was quicker than the Gautrain since he did not spend a long time in the queue before he was attended to by the healthcare workers.

The mobile clinics visit identified areas across the City and operate from 09h00 to 15h00 with a dedicated team consisting of two nurses and a driver. The team works tirelessly to nurse the community that is not within a 3-5km radius from an established clinic.

The services rendered include, but not limited to:

  • Minor acute ailments
  • Child health care: growth and development monitoring
  • Expanded programme on immunization (EPI)
  • Integrated management of childhood illnesses (IMCI)
  • Fertility planning services (FPS)
  • The cervical cancer (Pap-smear) screening
  • HIV testing
  • Provision of nutritional supplements
  • Other health screening such as blood pressure (BP), blood glucose (BG), weight (WT), and cholesterol screening.
