A Mom’s Dream of Her Own Home Comes True

A single mom’s dream for a decent home for her paralysed and autistic 16-year-old son was finally realised thanks to the intervention of MMC for Human Settlements Cllr Lesiba Mpya and Katlehong 2 Customer Care Manager Sonya Kraai.

Julia Motsoeng used to live in a cramped shack with her disabled son Tomo at Tsietsi informal settlement prior to receiving her very own home at Palm Ridge.

“We lived in a flooding shack and we went to the municipality offices where we received help from Customer Care Manager Sonya Kraai and Ward 61 Councillor Philemon Nkosi. I am so grateful for the prompt assistance we received from the municipality, MMC Mpya and municipality officials,” said Motsoeng.

MMC Mpya visited the family on Friday, 12 February, bearing gifts, a wheelchair and COVID-19 hygiene pack. The family was relocated from the informal settlement to the new housing development in Palm Ridge in December 2020.

“Further to the allocation of a house, we found it necessary to assist Tomo with a wheelchair and a COVID-19 hygiene pack. People with limited mobility might have an increased risk of becoming infected with COVID-19.  They have to come into direct contact with their caregivers and family members.  

“This initiative shows our commitment to work tirelessly in improving the lives of disabled and destitute people in the City of Ekurhuleni,” said MMC Mpya.

The house has two bedrooms, a lounge, kitchen, and bathroom.
