Ekurhuleni to Commemorate OR Tambo
The City of Ekurhuleni will commemorate the life and times of the late struggle stalwart Oliver Reginald Tambo by hosting a wreath-laying ceremony in his honour on Sunday, 27 October 2024. The annual event will take place at the Tamboville Cemetery in Wattville.
OR Tambo was conferred the Freedom of the City of Ekurhuleni in 2004 alongside his late wife Dr Adelaide and Chris Hani (posthumously). Tambo was born on 27 October 1917 in Bizana in the Eastern Cape and later settled in Ekurhuleni.
OR Tambo died on 24 April 1993 after a long illness. This year he would be turning 107 years old.
He and his long-time friend, Dr Nelson Mandela, were the first black attorneys to open a law firm during the apartheid era.
