EXECUTIVE MAYOR CALLS FOR BOOTS ON THE GROUND IN FAST-TRACKING SERVICE DELIVERY

Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor Alderman Nkosindiphile Xhakaza has called on all officials to hit the ground running in rendering quality services to the people of Ekurhuleni.

Speaking the first council meeting of the year, Ald. Xhakaza said: “At the heart of any effective local government is its ability to provide reliable, consistent, and high-quality services. Our people deserve clean water, well-maintained roads, efficient waste management, and uninterrupted electricity supply”.

Lamenting ‘recent years of infrastructure neglect and backlogs have left many of our roads, bridges, public buildings, and utilities in disrepair’ the mayor called for an immediate shift from reactive interventions to proactive, planned maintenance that ensures longevity and efficiency.

He committed to the city to prioritising the following:

  • Water infrastructure maintenance and repairs to mitigate water shortages and ensure sustainable supply to our communities is our number one priority
  • Enhance the usage of technology to safeguard our energy infrastructure to stabilise electricity supply and reduce interruptions caused by cable theft and vandalism.
  • Expanded waste collection services to address illegal dumping and improve sanitation across all communities.

The first citizen said the city will soon be launching a city-wide infrastructure audit to assess maintenance needs and allocate resources effectively; increase funding for road rehabilitation to address potholes and improve mobility; and fast-track repairs of water and sewer systems to prevent water losses and contamination.

“Enhancing maintenance of public spaces and parks to ensure safe and clean recreational areas for all residents is also a critical area of immediate intervention,” said Ald. Xhakaza, adding that “consequence management will be meted out against any inefficiencies from the staff.”
