MAYOR XHAKAZA OBSERVES WOMEN’S MONTH
August signifies Women’s Month in South Africa, culminating in the celebration of Women’s Day. Today, the 9th of August, with the main commemoration taking place in the Northern Cape. This occasion is profoundly significant, reflecting on the historical struggle for gender equality and the aspirations for a more inclusive future. The legacy of the 1956 march, where over 20,000 women protested the extension of pass laws, serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing fight against oppression, as women have long been regarded as one of the most marginalized groups in society. This day not only honors their sacrifices but also reinforces the commitment to advancing women’s rights and empowerment.
History, illustrates that the pioneering spirit of women predates the iconic 1956 march, exemplified by figures such as Charlotte Maxeke, who played a pivotal role in establishing the ANC Women’s League. Despite enduring significant obstacles and oppression, women have consistently demonstrated leadership in various capacities, often serving as the driving force behind the success of many prominent men. Since the advent of democracy, women have increasingly risen to prominent positions within industries, further affirming their innate leadership capabilities. It is evident that women possess a natural aptitude for leadership across diverse spheres of influence.
This year’s theme for National Women’s Day, “Celebrating 30 Years of Democracy Towards Women’s Development,” poignantly encapsulates the significant strides women have made in the context of democratic evolution. It underscores the remarkable progress women have achieved and highlights their ongoing journey towards empowerment and self-realization. Just as a fully-fledged democracy matures with a clear understanding of its identity and direction, so too do women, who are increasingly asserting their agency and shaping their futures in a rapidly changing society.
As we go about this whole month of August celebrating women, may what we do to mark it not only be symbolic but rather have depth and longevity for its permanent impact to be felt through generations to come. Happy women’s day and happy women’s month.
