Electrification Project on Course to Light up Mayfield Extension
Work to light up Mayfield Extension in Daveyton is at an advanced stage and residents will have electricity in their houses before the end of this year (2020).
This was the detailed report given to Executive Mayor Cllr Mzwandile Masina and Member of Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Water, Sanitation and Energy Alderman Tiisetso Nketle during their site visit to the Mayfield Extension 6 and Extension 45 on Monday (14 September 2020), where an electrification project is currently ongoing.
Work that has already been covered involves installation of transformers, cabling networks and installing of prepaid meters in both areas. The City had set aside a budget of R30 million for this project.
The over 200 households from Extension 6 will be the first to switch on their plugs when the City connects them to the electricity grid in October.
Meanwhile 600 residents of Mayfield Ext 45 will have to wait a little longer as they will be connected to the grid at the beginning of December.
Executive Mayor Cllr Mzwandile Masina expressed satisfaction on the work done so far with the electrification project at Mayfield Ext 6 and Ext 45.
“I have taken it upon myself to visit all projects across the city to assess the state of service delivery in the city. Today, we are focusing on energy related issues. I am happy with the current progress and the number of new substations that are almost complete. We continue to call upon communities to protect our facilities because it is unsustainable to continue replacing vandalised transformers and substations,” mayor Masina said.
Elizabeth Poko (52) is a homeowner at Mayfield extension 6 was in all smiles at the prospect that in just a few weeks she will have electricity in her house that she shares with her husband and their four children.
“Living without electricity we find ourselves breaking the law by connecting electricity illegally. So that we can avoid asking our neighbours to store food in their refrigerators. I’m so relieved to see this project, it means we will also live better lives,” Poko said.
