RESIDENTS URGED TO REFRAIN FROM DISPOSING OIL IN PUBLIC SPACES OR POURING IT OVER OBJECTS TO DETER LOITERING
The City of Ekurhuleni has noticed a worrying trend of residents pouring oil in public spaces such as on mini-substations, stormwater inlets and boulders to deter loiters from idling closer to their houses.
Oil solidifies once it washes into drains and pipes, causing blockages and localised flooding when it rains.
In addition, this act also contaminates rivers, streams, water bodies and harming aquatic life.
Thus, residents are encouraged to properly dispose oil by doing the following:
- Allow used oil to cool, then seal it in a sturdy container;
- Dispose of it in a household dustbin or take it to an approved recycling centre; and
- Never pour oil, grease, or chemicals into drains or onto the ground.Â
Furthermore, residents are reminded of the strict penalties prescribed by the Integrated Waste Management By-law, 2021 for illegal dumping which is also a threat to the environment. Offenders may face a spot (administrative) fine of R10 000; or upon conviction, depending on the severity of the offence, a fine of up to R100 000 or imprisonment for up to three years.
Residents whowitness illegal dumping or pollution, are encouraged to report it to the City of Ekurhuleni on any of the following channels:
