Greening Municipal Workspaces

In the heart of Ekurhuleni’s commitment to a greener future lies a powerful truth: sustainability begins at home, starting with the very buildings where municipal employees work every day.

The sustainable use of energy and water in buildings has become an imperative, it’s key not just to tackling climate change, but to improving the performance of facilities and the competitiveness of the businesses too.

Across the City, municipal workspaces are undergoing a transformative shift, significantly reducing energy costs through enhanced energy management practices and decreased energy consumption across all council buildings.

Our key initiative involves the installation of solar panels on strategically selected municipal buildings, aimed at harnessing renewable energy and battery for backup. Additionally, we are retrofitting building and street lighting systems with energy efficient LED technology and implementing occupancy sensors to optimise energy usage across our facilities.

We are currently in the process of obtaining Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) for our buildings as part of our commitment to monitoring and enhancing energy efficiency. This initiative provides clear, standardised insights into energy consumption and identifies opportunities for potential cost savings and performance improvements through Energy Efficiency and Demand Side Management (EEDSM) grant and City’s funding.

Inside the offices, biophilic design – putting the nature first mentality forward – which integrates natural elements like indoor plants and sunlight is being used to boost employee well-being and productivity. Recycled materials are being prioritised in furniture procurement, and digital workflows are replacing paper-heavy processes, cutting down on waste.

By leading through example, Ekurhuleni is showing that sustainability isn’t just a policy – it’s a culture. Greening municipal workspaces is more than an environmental gesture; it’s a statement of values, a commitment to future generations, and a blueprint for other cities to follow.
