People Fined for Electricity Theft
Approximately R50 000 of reinstatement fines were issued during the anti-electricity theft operations jointly held in Primrose and Elsburg on Monday, 15 June 2021.
During this operation, the Department of Energy and law enforcement agencies within the City, 13 properties were found with bypassed electricity meter boxes. The owners were each issued with R3613.79 as reinstatement fines. The operation to audit the electricity meter boxes continues across the City.
Ekurhuleni is losing millions in electricity theft which include illegal connections and metre tempering and bypassing.
Residential areas that are found with tempered metres are fined R3613.79 while businesses are fined R19 408.15 as reinstatement fines. Residents are urged to report any suspected electricity theft to 0860 543 000.
