CITY RESORTS TO HOT MIX ASPHALT IN THE WAR AGAINST POTHOLES
The City of Ekurhuleni is resorting to the exclusive use of hot mix asphalt for pothole repairs and road rehabilitation – a significant shift in its road maintenance strategy.
A substantial amount of R285 million has been allocated for a citywide pothole repair campaign. A further R50 million is allocated to the Sivala Ama-pothole blitz, which also includes repainting road markings, installing traffic signs, and clearing stormwater drainage systems.
“This move to utilize hot mix asphalt means longer durability for our road network, and better resistance to wear, reduction of the frequency and extent of repairs needed over time. It further means the overall lifecycle cost of road maintenance will decrease as the roads will last longer and require fewer intervention,” says MMC for Roads and Transport Planning Cllr Andile Mngwevu.
The city has already maintained 506 kilometers of roads in the current financial year alone, with a target to rehabilitate an additional 241km before the end of June.
“Ekurhuleni aims to keep our roads in good condition and reduce unsurfaced road backlogs drastically in the next few years,” says the MMC adding that the city aims to improve its collaboration with the provincial government when it comes to the maintenance of provincial roads.
Furthermore, the city continues on the mission to maintain 5 000 stormwater systems to prevent flooding and protect road infrastructure, especially during the wet season.
Residents and businesses are encouraged to report any road infrastructure issues through the City’s call centre on 0860 543 000, on X (CoE_Call_Centre), or the My CoE App.
