Ekurhuleni Ensures Public Transport Is Safe For All

Making public transportation safer is a major priority that the City of Ekurhuleni upholds during the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Following the launch of disinfecting of public transport facilities in May last year at the Germiston Station Public Transport Facility, the City continues to carry out random disinfection throughout the public transport sector. Already this has seen 867 000 taxis and 15 595 buses disinfected.

In the first two weeks of April 2021 and the City has already disinfected 9 250 taxis. This is in addition to the 395 bus services disinfected, including Ekurhuleni Bus Services and Brakpan Bus Company.

“Many people work in essential services and rely on public transport to get to work. The disinfection programme that is carried out daily at various transport facilities is one of our many efforts to curb the further spread of COVID-19.

“The programme is also extended to the scholar transport sector where we ensure the little ones are transported to school under safe conditions in line with the COVID-19 regulations,” said Member of the Mayoral Committee for Transport Planning Alderman Phelisa Nkunjana.

Ald Nkunjana further states that engagements with the public transport sector continue to reinforce the importance of commuters wearing facemasks, disinfecting of vehicles and ensuring the loading capacity complies with level 1 regulations.

The programme operates as a well-oiled machine and also provides health services, including COVID-19 screening and testing of public transport operators.
