The City Erects Road Signs to Ensure Safety in the Roads

The City’s Department of Roads and Stormwater erected new road signs next to a train bridge at Elgin Road in Birchleigh on Monday, 12 October 2020.

This follows numerous incidents of trucks getting stuck underneath the bridge. Chief Superintendent in the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Danie Van Heerden said the bridge has been troublesome as they responded to a number of incidences of trucks getting stuck underneath it.

“The bridge is only three metres high. We had to erect these signs as far as from 100 metres before the bridge, as a way of sending a warning message to the truckers about the height.”

Road signs are part of road safety, and are essential to guide and control traffic. The City continues to ensure that motorists and pedestrians are safe at all times by regularly placing road signs where there is a need.
