Truck Loses Load on R59

An articulated truck fully loaded with iron-ore stone overturned on R59 freeway southbound reading interchange in Alberton on 22 May.

The rescue and firefighting team from the Alberton Fire Station had to use the jaws of life to free the truck driver who was trapped inside his vehicle.

The City’s Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) Spokesperson Willian Ntladi confirmed that the truck driver was medically treated on the scene but had to be taken to the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital for further observation.

“The cause of the jack-knifing is undetermined; however, it is alleged that the driver came up in a high speed than expected. The vehicle could not turn as anticipated due to heavy load and high-speed momentum in a straight line,” alleged Ntladi.
