CITY CONDEMNS VANDALISM OF HEIDELBERG WASTE FACILITY

The City of Ekurhuleni condemns in the strongest terms the criminal act of vandalism following the break-in at the Heidelberg waste transfer station near Alberton on Saturday, 12 November 2022.

The perpetrators broke into the recently refurbished office building, damaging the change rooms, windows, doors, ablution facilities, fire hydrant and the security features including the guard house.

“This act of criminality will set the city back ten folds in its endeavour to bring about improved facilities to the benefit of the citizens who utilize such facilities,” said Zweli Dlamini.

“What is extremely sad is that the City is currently dealing with a massive waste collection challenge which requires a lot of resources, especially financial resources. Now, we will have to take money and redirect it to replace whatever has been left damaged in this senseless act of vandalism. It can never be right that when we are trying to improve the lives of our people, we have thugs who are hell-bent on taking our society backwards,” continued Dlamini.

The estimated value of the damage is approximately R500 000. A case of theft and vandalism has been logged with SAPS and investigations are ongoing.

The City appeals to members of the public to assist us in protecting public infrastructure and anyone who has information with regards to this particular incident is requested to come forward with the information to the authorities so that it can be followed up.
