Waste Removal in Joe Slovo and Reiger Park Resumes after Community Protest
Collection of waste had to be temporarily halted after a community protest by residents of Reiger Park, Popcorn Valley and Joe Slovo informal settlement in Boksburg from 17 to 31 July, and similar incident in Germiston on 7 August.
A wage dispute between a service provider contracted to service the informal settlement and the local litter pickers sparked the pelting of trucks with stones in Joe Slovo. However, a meeting with the effected parties resolved the matter and a work order was issued to the contractor to proceed with servicing the area.
Member of Mayoral Committee for Environment and Waste Management Cllr Khosi Mabaso has condemned the prevention of services delivery by community members as it results in illegal dumping which in turn results in foul odours, vermin infestation, environmental pollution and health risks related to decaying food, affecting the same community.
MMC Mabaso pleaded with residents across the City to desist from halting service delivery.
No injuries were incurred during the service delivery interferences and normal waste removal services have resumed in all affected areas.
