EKURHULENI CALLS FOR WATER CONSERVATION DURING THE FESTIVE SEASON

The City of Ekurhuleni urges its residents to adhere to Level 1 water restrictions to ensure sustainable water use during the festive period which is typically marked by an increased water consumption.

On November 28, 2024, the City of Ekurhuleni declared Level 1 water restrictions to prevent the depletion of its water storage. This decision was prompted by increased demand, which has led to low levels in Rand Water reservoirs.

The seasonal high temperatures and recreational needs compound the increased water demand. This leads to low reservoir storage levels and interruption in water supply.

Key aspects of these restrictions include:

  • Residents are encouraged to water gardens only between 6pm and 6am to reduce evaporation losses;
  • Activities such as washing cars with hoses and filling swimming pools are also restricted during this period;
  • Households and businesses should focus on reducing water waste by fixing leaks, using water-efficient appliances, and being mindful of daily consumption.

“During the festive season when families often engage in activities that increase water usage, the water saving measures are crucial as the province faces rising temperatures and heightened water demand, which strain the existing water supply.

“The city has taken proactive steps, including reducing water pressure in certain areas at night and prioritising repairs to burst pipes to minimise losses. Thus, residents are encouraged to continue being proactive in reporting leaks and adopting water-saving habits to help mitigate the impact of potential water shortages,” emphasised the City’s spokesperson Zweli Dlamini.
