CITY MOURNS CONNIE CHIUME

Today the City of Ekurhuleni joins the multitudes of art lovers in Ekurhuleni, Gauteng, South Africa and all over the world in mourning the passing of legendary actor Connie Chiume.

It is still unbelievable that the bubbly and full of life giant of our screens Mama Connie passed on at a Johannesburg hospital yesterday at the age of 72.

Chiume leaves behind a great legacy as a gallant South Africans actor, who could maneuver different roles in any tv show and/or movie. Her versatility on set is evident from the different roles she played in many productions including Yizo Yizo, Zone 14, Rhythm City and Gomora. The highlight of her career of course would probably be her role in The Black Panther – a Sub-Saharan reality movie which showed Africa through a very different lens, revealing the truth about the African continent.

Born in the Free State 72-years ago, Chiume would eventually settle here in Ekurhuleni where she continued with her art and dedicated most of her time developing local talent in collaboration with our municipality. One of those major collaborations was in the Ekurhuleni Thespians Masterclass which the city hosted at the Dumi Masilela Theatre in Germiston in partnership with the Connie Chiume Foundation and the MelaninGoddess Productions in 2021

Indeed, this is a devastating and untimely loss for the country especially our City as we were still planning to do more collaborations with the Connie Chiume Foundation.

Mama Connie Chiume has left us too early, but she will forever remain in our hearts as an activist who fought for the transformation of performing arts and filming industry, a gallant fighter against Gender Based Violence, and of course a philanthropist of note.

May Connie Chiume’s soul rest in eternal peace and join many in thanking her family for having borrowed us such a talent and beautiful hum being. We will surely miss her jovial spirit and positive energy.
