OR Tambo Debate Online Debates 2020

For the first time, the City will host an online OR Tambo Debates to commemorate the Life and Legacy of Oliver Reginald Tambo (OR).

The debates form part of a number of activities which the City host during October which is dubbed OR Tambo Month and celebrated yearly in Ekurhuleni.

This year the debates will be online to comply with the new social changes and government regulations brought on by Covid-19. This is also in line with the City of Ekurhuleni as a digital city.

Unlike previous years where learners from various schools nationally are involved, the twist this year is that only unemployed youths of the City are the ones that will be debating. It is assumed that these participants have no or little experience in debating or public speaking. Therefore the City is inviting young people, who need experience in debating, to a workshop to be held on October 19 and 20. Registration is free.

Format of the Debates

Preliminary sessions of the debates will be working groups on 21 and 22 October. Participants will be divided into different working groups and will be given a particular task. Each task would be to come up with adequate and implementable solutions to problems faced in their communities, these will be influenced by this year’s theme – “Drawing on OR Tambo’s legacy to help fight global pandemics of Covid-19 and social injustices”.

The final event will take place at the Council Chambers on 23 October where the winners would also be announced.

To participate you must:

  • Be between 16 to 35 years
