CABLE THEFT SYNDICATE WILL BE BROKEN – MMC FOR ENERGY ASSURES CHLOORKOP AND PHOMOLONG CUSTOMERS

The City of Ekurhuleni MMC for Energy Cllr Mzayifani Ngwenya told residents and business people in Phomolong and Chloorkop that the spike in cable theft incidents in the areas could be due ‘to a possible criminal syndicate but the matter is already on the radar of law enforcement agencies.’

Chloorkop is an industrial area with more than fifty big companies while Phomolong is a residential area that also comprises of small and medium enterprises.

“We know that people who are leading this crime have internal knowledge of the type of cables we use and where they are laid,” he said.

He called on everyone to work together with the city to fight this crime.

“Among the frequently stolen cables, there are those that are not readily available but are custom-made for the city which cannot be sold in small quantities. This is adding costs to the city and causes delays in the restoration of power leading to losses for businesses. That is why we call on everyone to join us in this fight,” he said.

He said: “If anyone sees suspicious activities like digging around their area, they should report to the police or Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department because that could be an act of cable theft.”
