EXECUTIVE MAYOR UPDATES ON THE BEDFORDVIEW WATER SUPPLY CRISIS

The City of Ekurhuleni acknowledges the ongoing water supply challenges faced by the Bedfordview community and expresses sincere sympathy to all affected residents and businesses.

We understand the significant impact these disruptions have had on daily life and are committed to resolving this issue promptly and effectively.

In collaboration with provincial and national government agencies, as well as Rand Water, we are implementing a comprehensive action plan to restore and stabilize water supply in the Bedfordview area.

A critical component of this plan involves maintaining the Klipfontein reservoir levels above 50% to ensure adequate pressure for the Bedfordview area. Currently, the levels are at 41%, which is below the optimal threshold.

To address this, a high-level meeting was convened on Sunday, 28 September 2025,  at 9:00 AM, led by the Executive Mayor and attended by the Rand Water Chairperson, City Executive, and General Manager. During this meeting, Rand Water committed to efforts aimed at raising and sustaining the Klipfontein reservoir levels above 50% as an immediate measure to alleviate the current water shortages.

Additionally, the recently refurbished Signal Hill reservoir, which underwent R4 million in re-sealing and refurbishment work, was inspected. However, it was noted that there was no incoming water supply from the Rand Water system at the time of inspection.

This highlights the need for continued collaboration to ensure that all infrastructure is fully operational and integrated into the supply network.

Looking ahead, a permanent solution is under development with the construction of the new O6 Rand Water pipeline, scheduled for commissioning in the first quarter of 2026.

This project is expected to significantly augment the current supply capacity and address high peak demand challenges, ensuring a more reliable water supply to the Bedfordview area.

The City of Ekurhuleni remains dedicated to resolving the water supply issues in Bedfordview and will continue to work closely with all stakeholders to implement both short-term and long-term solutions.

We appreciate the community’s patience and cooperation during this challenging period and will provide regular updates on the progress of these initiatives. “We shall work tirelessly together with all stakeholders to ensure that we resolve the water challenge” – Executive Mayor Xhakaza
